Can I use my insurance?

It’s good to consider a few issues when making the financial investment in your mental and emotional health. Among them are privacy, limitations, and future implications.

  • Privacy– paying without submitting to insurance guarantees the greatest privacy of your information. In order to obtain coverage, a  diagnosis is required which becomes part of your permanent medical record. This is increasingly available to a range of people.
  • Limitations– Insurance plans cover services they define as “medically necessary.” Some counseling is in that category, and some is not. Couples counseling is self-pay.
  • Implications– Certain diagnosis in your record can impact applications for life insurance, other health insurance, some employment and military service. It’s good to consider.
  • We are in-network with most BC/BS PPO Other companies most likely have out of network (OON) benefits available. If you do wish to submit, we can provide a detailed receipt, called a “superbill.”  You can send this to your insurance carrier for reimbursement.
  • Call the customer service number on your card to determine your coverage.

About the Counseling Process

How long is a session? How often do we meet?

  • Sessions are typically 50 minutes in length.
  • Initially, weekly sessions are most effective to build momentum. The closer you get to your goals, we begin spacing sessions to give you more time to independently incorporate what you are learning.

How does confidentiality work for couples’ therapy?

Any information obtained from either individual privately is confidential unless we have agreed otherwise.

We have a ‘no secrets’ policy which will be explained in the initial paperwork and reviewed at the first session. It basically means we cannot conduct couples therapy holding a secret that is destructive to the relationship (i.e., ongoing affair). If that is revealed, your therapist will work with that partner to divulge this information in the joint session.
